Our Mission

Every day we serve people from teens to seniors facing daily life challenges. Through 24-hour free confidential listening, comfort, and a connection to resources, education and emergency assistance, we give people the ability to take back control of their lives.

Our History

In 1963, the Reverend Dr. Alan Walker of Sydney, Australia, founded the Life Line Program. Life Line was designed to train volunteers to be available by telephone to callers 24 hours a day. On the heels of this program, a similar program was created at the Munger Place United Methodist Church in Dallas under the name CONTACT. In the Fall of 1966, a class of 150 people began their extensive training as telephone help line volunteers. On March 27, 1967, CONTACT Dallas became the first center in the United States and the model agency for a nationwide network of crisis intervention lines known as CONTACT USA.

Our Emergency Aid Program, established in 1983, is the only Dallas area provider of free emergency transportation to those individuals in dangerous or life-threatening situations to the safety of local teen runaway, domestic violence and homeless shelters or hospitals.

Teen CONTACT, established by CONTACT in 1986, helps approximately 8,000 young people annually including two dedicated crisis lines and presentations in classrooms and youth centers across the metroplex.

Through the generosity of the Meadows Foundation, in January 2009, CONTACT launched its newest outreach program for the Spanish speaking community designed to meet the needs of the ever-growing Hispanic population. CONTACT began recruitment of bilingual volunteers in May 2008 staff two new lines in our call center. CONTACT is now one of only 10 agencies in the nation to provide bilingual crisis line support.

CONTACT Crisis Line is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit agency funded by contributions from religious and civic organizations, individuals, foundations, and corporations. Recently, CONTACT became the recipient of one of twelve grants given by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration. CONTACT does not apply for financial support from United Way. Operating under the motto, "We are not here to judge. We are here to listen." CONTACT's board, staff, and volunteers are committed to offering the caring, positive human contact we believe is an essential resource for individuals, families and communities dealing with everyday life challenges.
